Is it legal?
Yes. In the UK, matched betting means using offers the bookmakers advertise themselves, and it is legal. You must be 18 or over to hold a betting account. → FAQ: Is it legal?
Isn't this just gambling?
Not the way it is meant to be done. You back at the bookmaker and lay at the exchange, so the two bets cover each other and the result alone doesn't decide whether you're up or down. The offer is what tips it. 2UP: a bookmaker running the offer pays your back bet as a winner if your team goes two goals up. B90: Betfair Sportsbook pays your bet as a winner if your team is ahead at 90:00. Extra Places: on some races a bookmaker pays more places than the exchange place market. How much money do I need?
Enough to cover a back stake and the lay liability at the same time. On a £10 back at 3.00 with a lay at 3.05, the liability is about £20, so roughly £30 is tied up until the match settles. Start small: the calculator shows the liability before you place anything. Never use money you can't afford to have tied up. (Example figures. Every alert shows the live ones.)
Will my bookmaker accounts get restricted ("gubbed")?
They might. Bookmakers decide who they take bets from, and accounts that only ever take offers are sometimes limited. No service can promise otherwise, and we don't. What helps: 2UP, B90 and Extra Places are offers on ordinary football and racing bets, not sign-up bonuses, and our filters let you choose your bookmakers and stakes.
