Your first extra place

Some races, the bookmaker pays more places than the exchange covers. Back each-way, lay the win and the place, and if your horse finishes in that extra place, both bets pay.

What you need

  • A bookmaker paying extra places on today's race (the daily list shows them).
  • An exchange with a place market on that race.
  • Enough money for the each-way stake plus two lay liabilities.
  • 18 or over.

A worked example

Newbury 15:15, 16 runners. The bookmaker pays 5 places; the exchange's place market pays 3. Back £5 each-way at 12.0, lay the win at 13.0 and the place at 5.0. Your horse finishes 4th: the bookmaker pays the place, and your place lay wins too.

Example odds. Most runs finish outside the extra place and cost the small qualifying loss.

Step by step

  1. Pick a race from today's list.
  2. Find a horse with close back and lay prices on both the win and the place market.
  3. Work out both lays with the Extra place calculator.
  4. Place the each-way back, then both lays, before the off.
  5. After the race, the result settles both sides. You don't need to do anything.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Laying the win only. You need the place lay too.
  • An each-way term (1/4 or 1/5) different from the one in the calculator.
  • A non-runner that changes the place terms. Check before the off.
